Translations

Ever since the World SF panel at ReaderCon, I’ve been better keyed-in to books that have been translated into English.

I managed to find and read Troll: a Love Story by Joana Sinsalo, bought and read Vlad by Carlos Fuentes and am first to borrow The Fat Years by Chan Koonchung from the library.

These will be posts, forthcoming, but in the intercisies of looking for these, I discovered The Center for The Art of Translation: www.catranslation.org

There’s a lot to learn here about language and our relationship with it, with one another through it. It’s fascinating to read about the troubles and pitfalls of translation, about how each translation is not just a Translat-O-Matic but a staggering work of genius–or sometimes a flop. In addition to free online fiction, they have a magazine, an audio podcast with interviews, and so many new books to explore.
