I like book contests and giveaways.
I find them more fun than lottery tickets, more engaging than tv, and more informative about the book and book blogging world than major publishing sites.
In general, they are another fun way to connect with authors, publishers, readers, and bloggers. I feel happy for a favorite indie author when I see a book contest for one of their books has many, many entries. It also validates my unquestionable taste in said author/book.
Plus, I just love getting books in the mail (or via email for ebooks). Though I do tend to read paper books before ebooks, simply because I can see them staring at me from my bookshelf, I do try to get to them all.
If, for some unmentionable reason, I don’t finish or like a book, it is a renewable gift; I can give it to a friend, the library, a reading group, nursing home, book cafe, or hold my own book giveaway. That book never really stops giving.
What attracts you to a book contest? Favorite author? Longed-for book? Favorite genre? Will you put your name in the hat for a book/author/genre that you haven’t tried before? If you tell me it was the cover that attracted you, I will totally understand. I won’t necessarily keep it to myself, but I will understand.
