We found an old copy of Choose Your Own Adventure! My four year old requests it every night, and each night he has a different story. This one is about green slime. What was your favorite? I remember one about a cave and treasure.
Spoiler alert: I was one of those kids who read all the endings before the actual story. Don’t hate me! I also admit that I will sometime skip ahead to be sure a character is ok. But I haven’t done that in a long time. Cross my heart. Promise.
Did anyone else just read all of the endings?
My favorite one was where you turned into animals. I’m not sure what the point was, but they’d ask if you wanted to become an animal of the land, air, or sea (I think). I do remember that sometimes you became a mosquito and died.
I always tried to save my place so I could go back. I’d have fingers inserted into the book in about three places trying to find the right way through the book.
I forgot about those books. I loved them.
i remember one with a quest and a cave. I got eaten or fried by the dragon a lot. Man i LOVED choose your own adventure books! I’d go through them maybe half a dozen times (and die 5 of those times), and then read all the endings and then try to backwards engineer my way to them.
I have one on my shelf, waiting to be scanned to try to make an ebook. I’ll get on that…

I remember reading one about vampires – do you choose to 1) stand and fight, 2) run like hell, or 3) hide behind a wintry bush and quake in fear and piss yourself. Unfortunately, I chose 2 – and died! Apparently vampires can run like the wind and there was never any chance that I could get away on foot. I felt immensely cheated. The correct answer was 3 – because vampires can’t smell your fear and are too dense to check behind the shrubbery.
I read every single one I could get my hands on.
