Epic Fantasy Quest

AtHomeCon caused many different things to percolate around in my noggin’. One thing I realized (and I don’t know how I got to this conclusion, but who cares), is that I’ve missed a bunch of the epic fantasies from the 80′s and 90′s. Jany Wurtz, Katherine Kerr, Irene Radford, Michelle West, Jenna Rhodes, Mickey Zucker Reichert…

I’m looking for epic fantasy or epic Sci-Fi (Space Opera, whatever: to-may-to, to-mah-to) Pre-2K, with books of at least 350 pp each, and at least 3 books in the series.

So, thus begins my Fat Old Fantasies Epic Quest.

Explored and discarded Irene Radford’s Glass Dragon. Utilizes a lot of the same components I’ve read many times already.

Starting The Initiate Brother by Sean Russell.

There are two series by Piers Anthony that were actually quite good. (I’m not talking about Xanth.) The first is the Incarnations of Immortality series. One of my favorites of all time. The second is the Apprentice Adept series. I would say both are 7 books long, but apparently he released an eighth Incarnation book a few years ago (which I haven’t read yet, and still trying to decide if I’m going to buy the paperback or hope it comes out on Kindle, although I’m leaning toward the paperback at this point).

Also, Mercedes Lackey’s series about the Heralds of Valdemar. Many of them were written pre-2k, and it’s a large collection of books of which there are three books in each series. Some of them are quite good (and some of them aren’t).

I read a lot of Mercedes Lackey in highschool, including The Heralds of Valdemar, which was a good series. All about the horses.

    Oh here’s another series: http://www.sff.net/people/davidbcoe/LonTobynPage.html

Although it barely hits the pre-2k mark. Seriously though, I LOVED the series. He’s got 2 (and part of a third) series under his belt now, and I love them all. Speaking of which, I wonder if the next book in the third series is finished. It’s torture waiting an entire year (plus having a few pages to remember all the characters).

I lied. The third series is apparently finished. Although I don’t think I’ve read the last book in it yet. Must find out if it’s available for Kindle…

I see D. Coe at our local Con circuit! I’ve read the Lon Tobyn, very nice! Did you know that he’s writing an historical fantasy c. Colonial America to be published this year? It’s under D. B. Jackson.

No, but I’ll have to check it out! I rave about his work all the time. I highly recommend reading the second series as well, it’s probably the best of the three.

I’ll start on that. I have them, signed! =)
If you PM me your mailing address, I can get an autograph for you–I won’t send a whole book, maybe a Kindle cover or something.

I NEED TO STOP! I just remembered another series. However this one begins pre-2k and then overflows into 2k, so it may not be applicable, but it was a phenomenal series: http://www.thelastrune.com/tlr/The_Last_Rune/The_Last_Rune.html

Six books! It might keep you busy for a couple of weeks. To date, it might be the author’s only series, but his website says he’s writing another under a pen name.

Very cool! Thanks for the recommendation!

Sure, it’s one of those books I randomly picked up off the shelf one year (and it was probably when I was reading Piers Anthony and they are right next to each other on the shelf), and I decided to give it a go. Very worth it I must say!

Stephen R. Donaldson’s – Chronicles of Thomas Convenant, the Unbeliever. I loved the first six when I was in High School. Apparently there are now 4 more books, who knew. I don’t know if they’d be as appealing to me today.

Wanted to say that it’s fantasy journey (read lots of walking), with magic, evil overlord with minions to fight and something about a ring … um yeah like Tolkien and Jordan, but hey this is a parallel universe…

I have to go with David Weber’s Honor Harrington books. First book was published during the early 90′s, and to my knowledge, combining the main story line with three or four spin-off story lines he’s 22 published and he’s still writing them.
